NEWS - LESSON 2: THE DAILY MAIL VS THE GUARDIAN

THE DAILY MAIL VS THE GUARDIAN:
//The daily mail and the guardian despise each other.
//The Guardian called a Daily Mail writer a bully.
//The Guardian reported on a story to dig at the Daily Mail being banned from Virgin Trains.
//The Daily Mail reported that the Guardian is fake news and 'purveyors of hate', in retaliation to them referring to them as an 'open sewer'.

IS THE DAILY MAIL WORTH READING?
//No respect for facts - Wikipedia doesn't see it as a reliable source.
//Xenophobia, sexism, homophobia, climate change denial,  Islamophobia.
//Obsession with things that cause (or cure) cancer.
//Historical support for the British fascist Party and the Nazis.

Some people say The Daily Mail is entertaining, an insight into the mindset of a selection of the British population, good for book reviews or celebrity gossip or no worse than other newspapers.

IS THE GUARDIAN WORTH READING?
//Guardian readers are insufferable because they 'know' they are right. If you don't agree with their right on view of thinking, you are somehow beneath them, because, as they are the most liberal, they are therefore obviously, the most enlightened.
//The Daily Mail makes you hate the underclass (and prejudice against other people), the Guardian makes you pity the underclass
and resent and fear the 'poorly educated' working class for how they resent the underclass.
//One invites you to dislike the minority, the other invites you to dislike the majority, both are wrong.
//the Guardian preaches that it's all kind, at least the Daily Mail doesn't try to hide the fat that it's a rag.

KNIFE CRIME REPRESENTATION:
The Daily Mail hypes up the dramatic nature of knife crime in London in order to spark fear in their readers. They make out that there is a very negative view towards certain races and draw your attention to them in relation to knife crime.
The Guardian report on this in a more sympathetic view - how people are in desperate situations leading to knife crime. They are in defence of the young people suffering from the effects of their government.

BREXIT IN THE GUARDIAN:
//Language choices present Theresa May as weak.
//"urged" "under pressure" "fragile Brexit truce" "faced demands" "could ultimately be pushed"
//Language towards Corbyn is quite Neutral; "the labour leader"
//The Guardian is not a strong supporter of Corbyn's leadership.

THE GUARDIAN HAS THE STORY ONLINE:

BREXIT IN THE DAILY MAIL:
//Identical images of May and Corbyn to the Guardian.
//May presented as strong and assertive; "warned Corbyn" "serious and engaged"
//Corbyn presented as:
Childish; "refusing to meet"
incompetent; "humiliating setbacks"
dishonest; "accusations of hypocricy"

THE DAILY MAIL DOESN'T HAVE THE STORY ONLINE:

GEORDIE GREIG BECOMES NEW EDITOR OF THE DAILY MAIL:
//Greig was the editor of the Mail on Sunday and now edits the daily paper following the retirement of Paul Dacre.
//Dacre was a staunch Brexit supporter, Greig a staunch remainer.
//Dacre was criticised for promoting hatred of minority groups, Greig is slightly less right-winged.
