THE KILLING - LESSON 3: INDUSTRY

WHO MADE IT AND WHEN?
//Created by Soren Sveistruep, a well known writer, screenwriter, and producer in Denmark. In the UK, he is best known for creating the 3 series of the Killing but has also produced shows that aired in Denmark. Last year his film, the Snowman, was released in the UK.
//The Killing was produced by DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation). DR is a government-owned television and radio public broadcasting company.
//Like the BBC, DR is funded by a licence fee that must be paid by all Danish households if they have a TV, smartphone, computer etc that will allow them access to the internet and therefore the ability to listen to or watch their products. (they are removing this in 2019 but it applied when the show was made in 2007)
//DR was founded in 1925.
//Other well-known TV shows created by DR included Borgen, The legacy, and The Bridge. The Borgen and The Bridge were created and aired in the UK due to the success of the Killing.
//ZDF helped produce the killing alongside DR. ZDF is a German PSB which is funded by licence fees and via advertising.

INDUSTRY + PRODUCTION:
//There is a huge difference between the money available for TV shows in Denmark from DR in comparison to Netflix.
//'The Killing' episodes reflects the economic context of a small PSB that can only finance one LFTVD a year - in collaboration with other European PSBs - and thus requires the drama to be popular and reflect the nation back on itself.
//DR may face more restrictions in terms of representation due to it being a PSB in comparison to Netflix.

DR:
//A dedicated PSB. It has a much smaller budget than the BBC but has become well-known worldwide for creating original, thought-provoking, socially-conscious dramas including The Killing, Borgen, and The Bridge.
//DR is selective about what they produce and aim to create original drama that focuses on real-life social issues that are present in modern society.
//It places a great deal of emphasis on allowing their dramas to develop slowly and to avoid giving too much away too soon.

ON BBC4:
//The Killing was screened in 2007 but didn't reach the UK until 2011.
//It was bought by BBC4 and aired weekly on the channel. 2 episodes were shown each week to ensure the audience remained interested.
//Some were concerned by the presence of subtitles. However, fans were not put off. Subtitled programs are now commonly shown on BBC4 and remain very popular.
//The show was not initially intended for a global audience but now has been seen by millions of viewers worldwide. An American version was made and proved popular worldwide too.

AFTER BBC4:
//The Killing was also released on DVD and also on Amazon Prime.
//The US remake (reviewed very badly) is also on Amazon Prime.
