END OF YEAR ASSESSMENT - REPRESENTATION: THE BIG ISSUE

EXPLAIN HOW MEANINGS ARE ESTABLISHED THROUGH INTERTEXTUALITY. REFER TO SOURCE A IN YOUR ANSWER [10]

Intertextuality establishes meaning through its connection to the real world and cultural significance. Its used throughout all forms of media; however, the Big Issue magazine often imbeds it into their house style, creating a recognizably unrecognizable aesthetic unique to them.

Though much representation through intertextuality within the Big Issue often goes back to pop culture iconography such as album covers like Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and TV Shows like Grange Hill, this particular cover from May 2020 is very much in tune with the world and social issues of the day. The idea of using the Government's official statement surrounding the pandemic in order to address it’s audience not only targets its readers or fans of certain celebrities, but everyone in the country, because it’s so recognizable to almost any UK resident. This enables the cover to be not for the niche, but for the public, creating meanings and representations of community during a pandemic and drawing on the need for social interaction on a large scale when most people are feeling alone.

Furthermore, the development of this slogan “Stay Alert” replaced the prior “Stay at Home, which drew a lot of attention across social media and the news, many believing it was too soon to be advocating for more freedom in fear of the public taking it too far. Building on this, the Big Issue have intertextually created a better message that need to be heard, much like people did across twitter at the original poster’s time of release. This engrained the idea that The Big Issue not only agreed with the public on his statement and supports the NHS, but also establishes the magazines willingness to use internet trends to their advantage and intertextually reference not just the original poster itself, but also the backlash and twitter trend that came along after it, creating meanings relating to being youthful and in support of the many, not the few along with establishing further modern nuances within it’s already unique house style.

To conclude, it is clear that Intertextuality relays meanings through its connection to not only the real world, but the public on a mass scale, both on a fanbase level and to national audiences.

NOTE: Wasn’t sure if theorists were applicable to this question or not, so this is purely analysis.

Some really good points Kate, but this is lacking some key points about specific intertextuality. You grasp the purpose of intertextuality generally, but seem to miss the key point that the issue is about showing the public that the pandemic has created huge problems for the homeless - an issue they care most passionately about! You need to be more specific about the links between the specific design elements, intertextual references, and the intentions and ideologies of the Big Issue generally.
